School Bus Rider Safety Tips for Students
Waiting for the bus:
- Dress appropriately for the weather.
- Arrive at your bus stop at least five minutes early.
- Wait for your bus in a safe, visible area off the road.
- Be considerate of your neighbors.
- Do not make loud noises
- Do not go on the neighbors’ properties
- Do not damage flowers, bushes, decorations, etc.
- If the bus stop is at your house, you must be outside waiting.
Boarding the bus:
- Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop.
- Board the bus in an orderly way, do not push or shove other students.
- Go directly to a seat and sit down.
- Follow the driver’s directions at all times.
While on the bus:
- Remain seated while the bus is moving.
- If other students board the bus after you, share the seat.
- No animals, birds or pets are allowed on the bus.
- Keep the aisle clear at all times so the driver can see out the back door.
- Keep your head and hands in the bus at all times.
- Do not throw objects in the bus or out of the window.
- Do not damage the seats or throw litter on the bus.
- Never scream or shout. Talk to your friends in a quiet voice. The driver must be able to hear the radio, sirens, or other noises outside the bus.
- Eating and drinking are not allowed on the bus at any time.
- Fighting and inappropriate language are not permitted.
- Follow the driver’s directions at all times.
Leaving the bus:
- Remain seated until the bus comes to a complete stop.
- Leave the bus in an orderly manner.
- Watch for traffic very carefully before crossing in front of the bus. Be sure to look both ways before crossing.
- Never get off at another stop without your parents’ permission.
- Never stop to pick up an item that you dropped near the bus or in the street.
- Go directly home. Never stop to visit with friends or neighbors without your parents’ permission.
